Botnet Detection Market size is projected to exhibit a robust growth between 2018 and 2024 propelled by rising number of global botnet attacks, growing penetration of smartphones, and the increasing proliferation of IoT devices in industrial environments. A botnet is a network of compromised terminals/computers that are under the control of a malicious actor. Infection of a computer with malware that allows third-party access and control leads to the formation of a botnet wherein each individual device in the network is referred to as a bot. Such bots are also called ‘zombie computers’ as they can operate without their administrator’s knowledge under remote direction.   Botnets are used by attackers for a variety of purposes including Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, email spam campaigns, data theft related to online identities & financial records, and for spreading spyware/adware. In recent years, botnet attacks have become increasingly sophisticated due to the emergence of new techniques of infecting victims and evading detection. Also, due to the increasing number of connected devices through IoT implementation, the vulnerability of networks toward malware has increased considerably leading to an enhanced threat of botnets. According to the 2017 Global Botnet DDoS Attack Threat Report released by China Telecom DamDDoS and Antiy Honey net Capture Group, 2017 saw a sharp increase in the DDoS attacks launched through botnets, especially during the soaring price of Bitcoin. The number of DDoS attacks launched in the Americas was the largest accounting for nearly 37% of the global attacks.   Botnet detection solutions are used in various industries including BFSI, IT & Telecom, media and entertainment, healthcare, government, and defense. In the BFSI sector, botnets generally target small banks and credit unions. Due to the growing popularity of mobile banking and payment services, there is a consistent growth in the number of attacks on mobile platforms that are aided by advancements in bypassing modern authentication methodologies such as Transaction Authentication Number (TANs) and Two-factor Authentication (2FA). The growing concerns related to the theft of critical financial records of the customers are prompting banking institutions to deploy stronger botnet detection solutions throughout their networks. With rapid technological advancements in banking trojans, companies in the botnet detection market are engaged in developing robust solutions for the BFSI sector.   North America is projected to hold a major share of the botnet detection market due to the rising incidents of botnet attacks in the region. Government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Defense, are propagating actions for taking necessary steps against the rapid proliferation of malware attacks by developing advanced automation methodologies. A report released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Commerce in May 2018 has identified botnet attacks as a global problem and has advocated enhancing the resilience of the internet and communications ecosystems in the country against botnets and other types of automated and distributed threats.   The Asia Pacific botnet detection market is expected to register an accelerated growth over the forecast timeline due to the rising adoption of IoT and rapidly increasing penetration of smartphones, leading to the increased vulnerability of connected devices. China dominated the global network of botnets in 2017. In June 2017, Kaspersky Lab reported that 17,060 botnets were detected in China where the botnet activity was reported to be 80% higher as compared to the U.S. where 7,350 bots were detected.   The companies operating in the global botnet detection market are engaged in new product developments to offer robust security solutions to their customers against constantly evolving botnet attacks. For instance, in February 2016, Akamai, one of the leading botnet detection solution providers, introduced Akamai Bot Manager. The solution, unlike the traditional bot detection products, allows companies in identifying bot traffic in a better manner and offering enhanced remediation capabilities. Similarly, in October 2017, Forensiq released its next-generation of botnet detection algorithms with improvements to its automated traffic detection technology.   Some of the companies operating in the botnet detection market are Akamai Technologies, PerimeterX, Distil Networks, Instart Logic, ShieldSquare, Unfraud, AppsFlyer, Pixalate, Zenedge, Intechnica, White Ops, Reblaze, Unbotify, Stealth Security, Mfilterit, Digital Hands, InfiSecure, Criticalblue, Datadome, and Imperva.
