POC testing allows physicians to quickly make decisions and begin treatment. Point of care improves clinical care and increases throughput, benefiting both patients and clinical facilities.  Point of care simplifies procedures fewer (often automated) steps. There is little need to allocate specimens or store and transport samples, reducing the potential for contamination or deterioration. Testing devices have been designed for point of care with reduced footprints and the ability to analyze a larger range of biomarkers, making them more flexible than machinery in the central laboratory. Portability and versatility have expanded POC testing’s capability; diagnoses are conducted in less traditional places, such as lower-income areas and under-served populations, rural regions, and areas with limited infrastructure. Point-of-Care testing can be defined as the medical diagnostic testing performed outside the clinical laboratory near the place where the patient is receiving treatment. This type of testing is performed by non-laboratory personnel and the results are used for clinical decision making. The Point-of-Care tests have immense potential to improve global health and to eventually reduce public and national spending on health. Global COVID-19 diagnostics market size is alone valued at USD 18.9 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9.1% from 2021 to 2027. These tests are critical in the management of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic for accurate diagnosis as well as for tackling the spread of the infection. Over 600 SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests are either approved or are in the development phase for clinical use. Therefore, an increase in the need for developing diagnostic tests is anticipated to drive the market growth. The current status of lead COVID tests is toward rising capacity but mixed accuracy. For efficient and accurate COVID-19 diagnosis, clinicians need a portable or an on-site diagnostic test for real-time management of patients in minimal time. This has encouraged the adoption of Point-of-Care (POC) testing for diagnosis, primarily aimed at reducing the assay duration from hours to a few minutes. The Pixel by LabCorp™ COVID-19 at-home kit is a molecular test, also known as a reverse polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). This test detects the presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The average time to deliver results is around 24-48 hours from when the sample is received at the lab. They have a partnership with FedeEX. Banglore-based biotechnology company Bione said it has launched a rapid antibody-based at-home screening test kit for COVID-19 that is capable of giving results within 5-10 minutes. The kit which is approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will be deployed in the market after proper quality checks and assurance. The screening test kit is based on immunoglobulins- IgG and IgM- and delivers results in 5-10 minutes. The user has to clean their finger using an alcohol swab and use the lancet provided to prick finger . The cartridge provided reads the results from the blood sample thus obtained, within 5-10 minutes, the company said. Following authorization from the FDA, two companies, Vault Health and 1Health.io (the parent company of Vitagene), announced plans to sell the saliva tests for at-home use under supervision from a doctor through telemedicine for Corona virus. Both tests are now available without telemedical approval.
