Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol is oil based thermoplastic polymer which is obtained by copolymerization of polyethylene Terephthalate and ethylene glycol. PETG is a polymer of PET and is made using two steps process, in first step esterification of components such as TPA, EG and CHDM are carried out at 230 nitrogen atmosphere and in second step poly-condensation are carried out generally at high temperature. PETG is clear and colourless, also capable of being sterilized due to which packaging materials such as PETG are mainly dominated by food and beverages industries. Thus, the growth of food and beverages industries is in-turn expected to boost the growth in demand for PETG. Additionally, the regulations relating to the use of certain plastic material in food and beverages, and packaging industries are expected to lead to a rise in demand for alternative materials such as PET and PETG, among others resins. Also, PETG is considered very sturdy packaging material, so growth in packaging industries is expected to enhance the growth of PETG market. Polyethylene Terephthalate-Glycol (PETG) products can be firm to flexible, depending on the thickness, and are relatively lighter in weight. Some of the other advantages of Polyethylene Terephthalate-Glycol (PETG) are that it is fully biodegradable, durable and exhibits relatively higher impact-resistant as compared to regular PET resin. Its usage is not confined to high purity applications, however aesthetic properties and resilience render it ideal for heat sealed and RF sealed blister packaging applications used for small electronic devices, cell phones, and other retail products.

Below are the key development related to PETG Market in 2020 and 2021.

May 2021: SK Chemicals invests $20 mn in Chinese recycled plastic firm to bolster PETG capacity. South Korea’s SK Chemicals Co. has invested 23 billion won ($20.22 million) in China’s Shuye to become the first to commercialize chemically recycled PETG, a key compound used to make beverage, cosmetics and medical packaging. SK Chemicals announced Monday that it has invested 23 billion won in Shuye, a Chinese company with technology to chemically break down waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET), to acquire a 10 percent stake. The deal gives SK Chemicals the right to an offtake supply of 20,000 tons of recycled PETG raw materials. PETG, or polyethylene terephthalate glycol, is an eco-friendly plastic derived from polyester. It is entirely recyclable and biodegradable without creating harmful gases. It offers the same transparency as glass but greater durability, hence it is widely used in medical protective visors or disposable containers for cosmetics and disinfectants. Source May 2021: Ultimaker Announces the Release of its Newest Filament, Ultimaker PETG. Leading 3D printing specialist, Ultimaker, has announced the launch of its new 3D printing material, Ultimaker PETG. PETG joins a number of other filaments offered by the company including, PLA, PVA, Nylon, CPE, ABS, PC, among others. The company stated that they chose to develop the material as their recent 3D Printing Sentiment Index revealed that it was one of the top three printing materials used by respondents. As they were not able to find a satisfactory, compatible filament through third parties, they decided to make their own filament, one that would integrate seamlessly with Ultimaker’s ecosystem. Though known primarily for FDM 3D printers including the Ultimaker S5 and S3, Ultimaker offers a number of other products to ensure that each user will get the best possible printing experience with their machines. For example, recently the company announced its new software strategy, integrating its Ultimaker Essentials platform into all its 3D printers to help customers simplify the printing process. They also sell a number of materials, both their own and from partners, that are compatible with Ultimaker printers. In this case, the company notes that the PETG has been designed especially to bring the best possible printing experience to Ultimaker users, preventing common problems such as stringing, warping or being incompatible with PVA and Breakaway support materials. Source April 2021: Selenis scales up PETG output. An important step in the acceleration of a circular economy, Selenis has scaled up its production of PETG resins with incorporated recycled content. Now at full production volumes, the Eco Series was commercialised in October 2019, providing a sustainable version of Selenis’ product portfolio with up to 50 per cent post-consumer recycled content. The Selenis process recovers monomers through chemical recycling. Glycolysis is used to break-up PET waste and reduce it to its polymer building blocks: monomers. Next, they are reintroduced to the value chain as recycled polyester raw materials. Prior to polycondensation, the co-monomers are subjected to a fine filtration process to remove impurities. During polycondensation the final IV and properties are obtained. Selenis is using this technology at both its plants located in Portugal and Italy. Source
