June 2021: Covestro and Nexeo Plastics develop new PC/ABS filament for 3D printing. Nexeo Plastics, a leading global thermoplastics resin distributor, has worked together with material manufacturer Covestro on the development and launch of the new Polycarbonate/ABS 3D printing filament Addigy FPB 2684 3D. This filament is available from now on via Nexeo Plastics’ distribution platform. The product sets the standard for performance by retaining its toughness and UV resistance in environments with higher temperatures of up to 122 degrees Celsius, enabling the printing of components for outdoor applications. Further, the new filament is very easy to print, providing the opportunity for broader applications in 3D printing. MakerBot Continues to Rapidly Expand Industrial-Grade Materials for the METHOD Platform. MakerBot, a global leader in 3D printing and subsidiary of Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS), continues to rapidly expand its METHOD materials portfolio with PC-ABS and PC-ABS FR. The addition of these two new materials brings the number of MakerBot materials for METHOD to 10, underscoring the company’s efforts to deliver a wider range of industrial-grade solutions to open more additive manufacturing applications for engineers. PC-ABS (polycarbonate-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) has high heat resistant properties and high tensile strength, which make it optimal for use across automotive, rail, and electronics industries. PC-ABS FR is a flame-retardant material that meets the UL-94 V0 standard, an important fire safety specification. The materials are ideal for applications such as automotive and rail parts, LCD panels, appliances, electronics enclosures, handles, adapters and chargers, portable handheld devices, and cosmetic covers. The addition of polycarbonate to ABS delivers higher impact strength and heat resistance than the standard ABS material, and is used frequently in injection molding. PC-ABS prints more successfully with an enclosed heated chamber, consistently delivering high-quality parts. Parts printed on a desktop 3D printer with only a heated build plate are susceptible to temperature variations that can cause part deformation and lower part strength. March 2020: UV-transparent PC Resin Offers Solution for Li-ion Batteries. In combination with a UV-curing acrylic adhesive from Henkel, Covestro’s PC compound is used in Li-ion battery cell holders. As automotive electrification continues to evolve, powerful lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery architectures are at the center of discussions around electric vehicles. While battery system designs vary by manufacturer, the joint performance objectives for all automotive battery technologies are longer lifetime, operational safety, cost efficiency and reliability. In their most recent collaboration, Henkel and Covestro developed a solution enabling the efficient fixation of cylindrical Li-ion battery cells inside a plastic cell holder.
