Below are the key development related to Gas Insulated Substation Market in 2020 and 2021.

July 2021: Nuventura, E.DIS Collaborate on Commercial Demonstration Project in Germany Companies complete first commercial installation of Nuventuras Nu1 medium-voltage GIS. Berlin-based deep tech company Nuventura is collaborating with grid operator E.DIS on a commercial demonstration project in Ketzin, Brandenburg, Germany. Together the companies have completed the first commercial installation of Nuventuras Nu1 medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). Nu1 is a fully certified (type-tested) GIS for primary distribution grids, which uses dry air as an electrical insulating medium instead of SF6. The pilot project will also test the IoT solution provided by Nuventura, which aims to improve switchgear asset management through real-time monitoring. Source February 2021: Linxon wins German substation order. Linxon has been selected to supply a 380-kilovolt (kV) Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation for the German transmission system operator TransnetBW in the town of Bühl, southwestern Germany. For this project, Linxon will design, supply, install and commission a 380 kV GIS substation to replace an existing 220 kV substation, which it will dismantle as part of the contract once the new GIS equipment has been put into operation. The upgrade includes 4 new GIS bays, double-busbar, control and protection systems, substation automation, measurement and telecommunication systems, new auxiliary supplies, 2 x 20 kV compact stations, a 110 kV cable connection between 380/110 kV transformers and an existing 110 kV substation as well as all buildings, infrastructure and roads. The new installation will be equipped with Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology that offers outstanding reliability and can be safely operated in confined spaces. The ELK-3 GIS supplies reliable power up to a rated voltage of 420 kV. Using a high-performance design with standardized dimensions, the ELK-3 GIS is ideal for optimal substation layout with reduced footprint and exceptional operation. Source December 2020: GE win contract for green gas-insulated substation. SSEN Transmission have announced that it has awarded a contract to GE Renewable Energy (GE)’s Grid Solutions business to manufacture, deliver and commission a 420 kV Green Gas for Grid (g3) gas-insulated substation at its new Kintore 400 kV substation in Aberdeenshire, on the north-east coast of Scotland. This contract will support SSEN Transmission in moving a step closer to reaching its carbon reduction targets by building the transmission infrastructure necessary to connect and transport renewable energy, while avoiding the addition of approximately 350 000 t of CO2 equivalent to the grid. The 420 kV g3 circuit breaker at the core of the substation is being co-funded over a two-year period by the EU’s LIFE programme, which is dedicated to climate change. SSEN Transmission joined GE’s LifeGRID project earlier this year to contribute to the specification of the circuit breaker’s main performance requirements. GE’s g3 technology is an alternative to sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), an insulating and switching gas that has been used for decades in high-voltage substation equipment. Identified as one of the world’s most potent greenhouse gas by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, SF6 is estimated to contribute 23 500 times more emissions than CO2, if leaked, and can remain in the atmosphere for up to 3200 years. While SSEN Transmission’s material contribution to action against climate change is enabling the transition to a low carbon economy, the Scottish utility is also determined to tackle its own emissions. The company has set an ambitious goal to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by one third by 2026, making it one of the world’s first electricity networks company to receive external accreditation for a Science Based Target in line with a 1.5°C global warming pathway. Source March 2021: GE wins order to upgrade Gas-Insulated Substations in Nepal. GE Renewable Energys Grid Solutions business has announced that it has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to upgrade three Gas-Insulted Substations in Khimti, Barhabise and Lapsiphedi in Nepal.Issuing a press statement the company said it has been awarded to construct three 400 kilo volt (KV) Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS) by the state-owned Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The three GIS that GE will upgrade from 220 KV to 400 KV are a critical part of Nepals South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Power Transmission and Distribution Project. Source
