Bee venom which is also known as apitoxin is produced by female worker bees and is known to contain many active components peptides like melittin, apamin, mast cell degranulating (MCD) peptide, and adolapin. Various enzymes, such as phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and hyaluronidase along with amino acids and volatile compounds. Several studies are ongoing for the therapeutic potential of these components in treating human inflammatory diseases as well as central nervous system diseases, such as Parkinsons disease (PD), Alzheimers disease (AD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Bee venom extract has also shown beneficial anti-cancer and anti-viral potential against ovarian and prostate cancer, breast cancer as well as HIV. Bee venom extracts are usually delivered in a freeze-dried form (lyophilization) to assure a long shelf life and there is an advantage that targeted dilutions are easy to achieve. There is ongoing research on the therapeutic applications of Bee Venom as an Anti-Inflammatory, treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinsons Disease(PD), Alzheimers Disease(AD), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS). The use of apitoxin, especially its main compound melittin, as a novel cancer-treatment strategy has gained wide importance. In fact, melittin is known to be a nonspecific cytolytic peptide that can attack the lipid bilayer, thus leading to significant toxicity when injected intravenously. Nevertheless, many optimization approaches, including the use of nanoparticle-based delivery of melittin, have been exploited. Remarkably, the crude BV as well as melittin have shown antitumor activities against different cancer cell types including breast, liver, leukemia, lung, melanoma, and prostate cancer cells. In September 2020, Harry Perkins Institue of Medical Research(Australia) was published in a prestigious international journal NJP Nature Precision Oncology. The research showed honeybee venom rapidly destroyed triple-negative breast cancer and HER2-enriched breast cancer cells. Triple-negative breast cancer, until now has limited treatment options. Cancer institute records indicate Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all breast cancer. As per the research, a very small, positively charged peptide in honeybee venom called melittin significantly, selectively, and rapidly reduced the viability of triple-negative breast cancer and HER2-enriched breast cancer cells. Melittin within 20 minutes, was able to substantially reduce the chemical messages of cancer cells that are essential to cancer cell growth and cell division and completely destroy cancer cell membranes within 60 minutes. Melittin could also be used with small molecules or chemotherapies, such as docetaxel, to treat highly-aggressive types of breast cancer. The combination of melittin and docetaxel was extremely efficient in reducing tumour growth in mice. More about the research here. Bee venom plays an effective role in the improvement of skin wrinkles, and it is used in the cosmetics industry as an antiwrinkle agent. Bee-venom serum provided greater efficacy in terms of total wrinkle area, total wrinkle counts, and average wrinkle depth along with photodamaged skin. Long-term treatment with bee venom-containing cosmetics is considered to be safe because the irritation potential of bee venom is negligible. Bee venom is being increasingly used in products for common acne (everyday pimple) and cystic acne as both conditions can cause inflammation and puffiness. Numerous cosmetic products like face creams, body butter, face masks, moisturizing lotions, and anti-wrinkle products now contain varying amounts of Bee Venom.
